If you're taller than average, you'll pay a surcharge
I'm six foot nine and have the same complaints about flights. It used to
be that I'd walk up to the check-in counter and the clerk would already be
ensuring I'd be put in the emergency exit row or bulkhead row. They'd move
average-sized people from this row to accommodate my needs. Then the
airlines changed some procedures and people had the opportunity to book
the emergency exit row, but airline staff still had discretion. They had
the power to move people around.
More recently, airlines began letting people book the emergency exit row
and bulkhead rows for an extra fee. Then there was no opportunity to move
anyone around, because the spot was paid for. The airlines changed the
expectations of the traveller at the expense of tall people.
People will move if they see some-one has a need, but not if they've paid
extra for their spot.
Now, if I can't book the emergency exit row, I have to hope someone will
be kind enough to give up their seat, or I try to book another flight.
Average-height people can't understand the frustration of tall people who
have to pay extra for everything. There is a surcharge for being outside
the average. Though we look like basketball stars, we don't have
basketball star bank accounts.
Air travel is only one of a multitude of issues. Clothes for tall people
are tricky to find. I don't fit in many cars, I can't stand up in most
RVs, and many hotel beds and doorways are too short.
Attitudes toward the consumer have changed. There used to be a desire to
see one's needs and sympathize. This sense of community or accommodation
is gone.
I've tried to appeal to governments to get some sort of recognition of the
challenges facing tall people. I'm curious to know if there is a subsidy
to offset the financial burdens.
People don't see height as a burden. I can't go out of my house without
comments about my height; mostly people love it. But when they say, "I
wish I were tall," I always tell them, "Be careful what you wish for." And
I mean it.
